"Usually it's the guys who are 6"2" who pass out, and that's before we even put in the needle." So said the kind nurse this morning, as I sat with my head between my knees, trying to combat the dizziness. Let me say in my defense that I have very low blood pressure, which makes me light-headed, and I had to fast before the blood test, and it is very hot out. Still, I wish I didn't humiliate myself at every medical procedure. Anyway, it was just a check-up and it's over. But my hat is off to nurses today - kind, competent, and patient with this patient.
Kate, thanks for the "pat" on the back regarding nurses. I have been a registered nurse for 39 years, mostly in the Emergency Department or the Operating Room. I have seen it all over the years! As far as a venipuncture (blood collection), I can usually sense if a patient is going to experience a "faint" moment. And I always listen to my patients. If they comment that they have to lay down vs sitting in a lab chair, I honor their request. sIt saves me from picking them off the floor or yelling for the smelling salts. This feeling is typical of 65-70% of the population. Let me make it clear that both genders participate in this weakness. If my patients liked needles, I would have to start wondering about them. Sounds like you did well, Kate and hope your test results are favorable for you.
