Yesterday I was in Manhattan on some book promotion-related business, and after my meeting, My Daughter and I met at the Frick Museum, a gem of a collection on the upper East Side. They were having a special exhibit of Picasso's drawings. It was fabulous, particularly because it showed the artist's progression, so you could watch him master classical drawing and then begin to play with shape and form. The first two pieces in the show were done at ages 9 and 11 respectively. At that age, he was rendering amazingly realistic forms.
Anyway, it reminded me of one of my favorite mother-son quotes, by the artist himself:
"My mother said to me, if you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as pope. Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso."
